The Brooklyn Game relaunched, now owned by... Schneps

A 12/20/21 article by amNewYork Metro sports editor Joe Pantorno, Nets fans rejoice: Schneps Media acquires The Brooklyn Game; welcomes Christian Arnold:
Brooklyn Nets fans have something to cheer about. TheBrooklynGame.com has relaunched under the ownership of Schneps Media.

The new design is sleek, modern, and reflective of your favorite team’s colors. Most importantly, the site is updated daily and has a large community of visitors that are passionate Nets fans.
...We are also happy to announce the hiring of The Brooklyn Game’s new editor Christian Arnold.

“I couldn’t be more excited to join the amazing team at Schneps Media and the opportunity to cover New York’s most fascinating team, the Brooklyn Nets,” Arnold said. “They have a strong, passionate fan base that I cannot wait to engage with and bring the best coverage possible to.”
TheBrooklynGame.com was founded in 2012 covering news, analysis, interviews, and community, as well as coverage of the cultural impact of the Nets on Brooklyn (and vice versa).?

“Our goal is to be the number one source for Nets fans to get up-to-date information and analysis on what we all hope will be a national championship team,” said Josh Schneps, CEO of Schneps Media.

Schneps owns The Brooklyn Paper, the Courier-Life chain, Brownstoner, and the now-combined free tabloid dailies Metro and amNY, among many other local publications.

Publisher Victoria (Vicki) Scheps is close to mayor-elect Eric Adams, and publishes the Borough President's promotional publication, One Brooklyn, for free, selling ad space--an arrangement permitted by the city's Conflict of Interests Board yet criticized by watchdogs.

The Brooklyn Game launched for the Nets' first season in 2012, the work of journalist and entrepreneur Steven Waldman, and had a lively presence--though way secondary to the established NetsDaily--in its initial years.

Up for sale

The seller was unmentioned in the new article. But on 6/21/19, Waldman posted Want to Own The Brooklyn Game? (nine days before the Nets' "clean sweep" acquisition of Kyrie Irving, Kevin Durant, and DeAndre Jordan):
I have never put in much time to making this work as a viable business. So it’s mostly run as a passion project – not just mine but the editors and writers who loved covering the Nets, and the fans who appreciated their analysis.

Alas, the time has come to pass the torch.

This site currently makes very little money (nor have we worked that very hard). Then again also costs almost nothing (as long as its volunteer driven). I suspect that someone more focused on building traffic and revenue could make this a viable business – especially now that the Nets are good! — but honestly I’m not totally sure. At a minimum, The Brooklyn Game can continue as a passionate community – and an incredibly fun project.

Since then, the website puttered along, with relatively little fan engagement, according to its Facebook page. But the Nets are now a championship contender.

Apparently Schneps sees that the hiring of one new staffer, plus the network effects of its suite of publications and the backing from corporate infrastructure, will make a viable business.
