About that plaza

Note that the plaza is an often publicly accessible place but not quite a public place; I wrote in May that security guards ejected my small tour group, and arena operators regularly use the plaza to hawk event-related merchandise. And, of course, it has a naming rights partner.

"We're very excited about the programming opportunities for this space," said MaryAnne Gilmartin of arena developer Forest City Ratner said at a September 2010 public meeting. "We're looking at the possibility of a farmer's market, movie nights, and other events and festivities."

There haven't been that many "programming opportunities" aimed at the general public, but the Barclays Center, with Forest City then 55% owner of the arena operating company, did from July 2013 through Thanksgiving that year host a Wednesday greenmarket on the then "Daily News Plaza."

That operating company is now 100% owned by Mikhail Prokhorov's BSE Global.
