For Markowitz's final State of the Borough address, an inevitable setting: the Barclays Center

It was inevitable: after holding his most recent annual State of the Borough addresses at Brooklyn College, Sunset Park High School, and the Park Slope Armory, for his final such address, on Thursday, April 11, Borough President Marty Markowitz will be at the Barclays Center arena, the most dramatic symbol of his tenure. (Attendance is invite-only.)

When he spoke previously, there was relatively light enthusiasm for the upcoming arena. This time it should be different. (After all, the arena has been winning design awards, such as this one from AIA New York.)

Then again, let's see how much people cheer for part-time jobs with no benefits.

  1. Interesting that if the arena is winning so many graphic awards the arena needs to be so graphically altered on the invitation? The choices made in that graphic alteration indicate what Markowitz would just as soon not have people observe at the arena. Also, interesting is that given the arena's seating capacity, why does the event have to be by "invitation only" if the arena and Markowtiz's association with it is so popular. "Invitation only" means that there are a too many who they expect would be protesting if this "government" event were open to the public rather than managing a supporters-only event on government-subsidized private property.

    1. All his state of the borough addresses have been invitation only--that's how they avoid protesters--though presumably this one may have a larger capacity.

I'm trying to figure out why I was invited. I'm a nobody and I think Marty is a damn clown.

    1. I think a *lot* more people were invited this year. Bigger venue. Last speech.

My wife and I, long-time Marty Markowitz supporters, are honored to be invited to his final (alas!) state of the borough address on April 11. Marty is the avatar of Brooklyn's can-do spirit without peer. He will be missed. Joe & Eileen Dorinson
