From the latest Construction Update: Saturday work at residential sites ramps up (and is finally disclosed)

The latest Atlantic Yards/Pacific Park Construction Update (bottom), covering the two weeks beginning Monday, May 13, was circulated at 4:28 pm Friday May 10 (lead time) by Empire State Development (ESD) after preparation by Greenland Forest City Partners.

For the first time in recent weeks/months, the update mentions Saturday work at two residential sites, The citations:
  • B15 [664 Pacific, aka 37 Sixth]: Excavation and foundation construction work are underway on the site. Appropriate dust and noise mitigation measures are in place. This work may occur on Saturdays during this reporting period subject to DoB permits.
  • B4 [18 Sixth]: Excavation and foundation construction work are underway on the site. Appropriate dust and noise mitigation measures are in place. This work may occur on Saturdays during this reporting period subject to DoB permits.

A look at Department of Buildings (DOB) requests for After-Hours Variances for B15 shows that variances were already granted for April 13, April 20, and April 27, and then again for May 11, though no such plans were noted in previous Construction Updates. Such work was the subject of complaints at the recent Quality of Life meeting.

There have been no previous requests for After-Hours variances at 18 Sixth.

The justification for the most recent request at 37 Sixth is "public safety," but surely also relates to convenience and efficiency.

Other changes: more railyard work

There a few other changes compared to the previous update.  Notably, at the two-block Vanderbilt Yard:
  • LIRR and Contractor to restore/install Track 3 and Track 4 to permanent storage yard configuration.
  • Contractor to install 6th Avenue Stair Tower structural steel frame.

At the East Portal, new work includes:
  • Site restoration and track installations for East Lead Track, Track 1, and Track 2 to occur.
  • Contractor to begin restoration of East Portal roadway, sidewalk, and curb for Atlantic Avenue.

Also, while previous updates said that "LIRR may be utilizing portions of the yard lighting for security reasons," and expected to continue through March--which was already out of date--it now says the work is "expected to continue through the end of May."

More after-hours work

Other work at the east end of the railyard includes unspecified extended hours this week:
  • LIRR will mobilize and construct permanent yard configuration storage tracks during overnight/second shift hours during this reporting period.
  • Contractor plans to work extended hours to backfill behind East Lead Retaining Wall and prepare for East Lead Track installation during week of 5/13.
