In my Atlantic Yards wrap-up recently in the Brooklyn Downtown Star, I tossed in an observation about Forest City Ratner's agreement to "work with" the teachers' union, city, and state, in creating a new Brooklyn Technical High School:
While there was no immediate elaboration of "work with" - the Daily News, jumping the gun, suggested that Forest City Ratner would build a new school - the statement provoked some to question whether the developer had designs on the massive Brooklyn Tech building at the edge of Fort Greene Park.
We don't know, but, it shouldn't be dismissed. The housing market is hot. Forest City Ratner plans to turn another nearby building, 80 DeKalb Avenue, a factory-turned-offices, into housing. And schools have been turned into housing before--remember P.S. 9 in Prospect Heights? (Could it work with Brooklyn Tech? An informal canvass produced mixed opinions.) And no one has answers just yet.
