From the latest Atlantic Yards Construction Alert: work starts as soon as June 30 that will constrict Atlantic Avenue, limit Pacific Street; modules up to 165; still snags

According to the latest two-week Atlantic Yards Construction Alert (below), dated June 23 but distributed yesterday at 2:30 pm--more than a day-and-a-half late--by Empire State Development after preparation by Forest City Ratner, major work will start on or around Monday, June 30 to enable railyard renovations and later work on the Barclays Center's green roof.

The work includes removal of existing concrete medians on Atlantic Avenue beginning at Fort Greene Place, and shifting/altering of traffic lanes (3 westbound lanes and 2 eastbound lanes) during MPT (maintenance and protection of traffic).

It also includes partial blocking of Pacific Street east of Sixth Avenue; Pacific Street will become one way (westerly) between Sixth and Carlton Avenues. 

Module deliveries up to 165

Over two weeks, the number of modules delivered to the B2 residential tower rose from 117 to approximately 165, which means 48 were delivered and installed over two weeks, an average of 4.8 per business day, a much higher ratio than in the past--though deliveries had been suspended for months.

Some 930 modules are needed for the tower, which has seen its completion date moved back a year to December 2015.

Some modular snags

Not all the deliveries have gone smoothly. As I wrote, webcam evidence suggested that on June 16 a module was delivered after the official time period and blocked both a bicycle lane and a turning lane.

Also, as noted on Atlantic Yards Watch, a module blocked the Dean Street turning lane (right) and partly blocked the bicycle lane on June 23 from approximately 10:05 am to 1:25 pm.

A tour bus blocking neighbors

Another problem noted on Atlantic Yards Watch, on Friday, June 20:

Driver of a tour bus who brought visitors to the VIP Barclays tour spent a couple of hours relaxing in shade with his bus parked on Dean St. close to the intersection of Carlton, blocking a private driveway. He said that he received no direction about where to park his bus during the arena tour. This is the second time recently I've seen a bus parked in the same spot, driver of the previous bus refused to say he was bringing visitors to the Barclays arena.

B-2 Tower, Modular Residential

• Erection of 6th floor is underway; 7th and 8th floor modules erection will following during this reporting period. During this same period mechanical, plumbing and electrical mate line will continue.
• Approximately 165 modules have been delivered and installed to date.
• Masonry and spray on fireproofing will continue on the 1st floor during this reporting period.
• Hoist cars have been set. Installation of first tie-in to the 3rd floor will continue this reporting period. The hoist is being erected at the southwest corner (Dean Street & Flatbush Avenue) of the building. Hoist will become operational after erection of the 8th floor modules.

LIRR Yard Activities Block 1120 & 1121

• Contractor will continue installation of tiebacks, lagging, excavation of soil and demolition of the lower portion of the concrete retaining wall along Pacific Street during this reporting period.
• Contractor will continue restoration of the earthen ramp along Pacific Street in block 1121 (east of Carlton Avenue Bridge) during this reporting period. Particulate monitoring will continue during these activities and soil will be kept damp as needed.
• On or about 6/30/14, Contractor will commence Maintenance and Protection of Traffic (MPT) work on Pacific Street, just east of 6th Avenue. Support of Excavation (SOE) work will take place along the north side of Pacific Street within this MPT. SOE installations in this area will include the installation of solider piles, lagging, and tiebacks. For approximately the first 4 months of this work (during pile drilling), MPT will extend into Pacific Street and Pacific Street will become one way (westerly). Sound blankets will be installed along the MPT barrier fencing. Once pile drilling is complete, the MPT will be shifted north allowing two-way traffic to be returned on Pacific Street; however the north sidewalk in the area of the work will remain closed for ongoing SOE installations. The MPT will remain in this location with this portion the north sidewalk closed for approximately 8 months. Notification will be provided to the community in advance of traffic directional changes along Pacific Street. All work shall be done during daytime hours pursuant to approved DOT permits; while not expected, if required, any nighttime or weekend work would be pursuant to proper permits and advance notification will be given to the community.
• On or about 6/30/14, Contractor will commence Maintenance and Protection of Traffic (MPT) work on Atlantic Ave, between Fort Greene Place and South Cumberland Street. MPT installations, which will include removal of existing concrete medians (starting at Fort Greene Place and proceeding east), placing MPT barriers and shifting/altering of traffic lanes (3 westbound lanes and 2 eastbound lanes will be maintained throughout the term of the MPT installation), will allow for construction of the LIRR West Portal along the south side of Atlantic Avenue. MPT installations along Atlantic Avenue will be modified as work progresses. This work will be ongoing and MPT will be in place along Atlantic Avenue for approximately 24 months. All work is planned to take place during daytime hours pursuant to approved DOT permits; while not expected, if required, any nighttime or weekend work would be pursuant to proper permits and advance notification will be given to the community.
