Yes, New York Liberty ticket prices keep going up, and loyalists, especially with once reasonably-priced courtside seats, feel the pain.

Some long term fans of the New York Liberty are dismayed by steadily rising prices for a more coveted commodity, as Madeline Kenney reported recently for the New York Post.

For example, one fan with a seat near courtside reported a price increase from $500 to $600 between 2023 and 2024, then a doubling to $1,200/seat this year, and a price tag of $1,881 next year.

Others with less precious seats saw 20% increases. A Liberty spokesperson said they still have $25 tickets; after all, they've opened the upper bowl.

Why underpaid?

Surely increased team revenues from ticket sales could be reflected in increased salaries, but that's not the only thing.

WNBA players are notoriously underpaid, to quote economist Claudia Goldin, who in a New York Times essay June 6 observed that the WNBA gets about one-third the broadcast media attention as the NBA does, and about one-quarter of the attendance per player.

So while, the women thus should earn "roughly one-quarter to one-third" of the average NBA salary, the actual ratio is "a minuscule fraction — a mere 1/80th." Her conclusion: the WNBA is getting an unfair split from its parent.

More responses

Among the responses to Kenney's post on X/Twitter:
Great article, this will be interesting to see play out across WNBA. I think one thing about W was it is somewhat affordable that families can afford to take families & children in this economy.

I ended my season tickets after last season. Was a member for multiple years. The prices felt unfair, especially compared to the secondary market for games not including Caitlin Clark/Minnesota. You could attend every non Fever/Lynx game for cheaper than sticking with STs (I did)

I'm moving my seat up to the 200s next season. If it goes up again after 2026, I'll cancel/opt out
One fan quote-Tweeted Kenney's post, commenting:
Fantastic journalism: and to reiterate, what bothers people is that there’s been zero communication about, well, anything. Just an “if you don’t pay someone else will” message discarding loyal fans that helped grow the game… care to comment @joetsai1999 or @nyliberty
Only one person has responded so far, stating "$ over loyalty," which prompted the original poster to state, "100% profit over people."

A superfan feels it

Also, a superfan, who presumably might have gotten a special deal, has gotten priced out, saying her price increase, for two seats, was from $19,174 to $69,300:
Clearly, the Liberty are no longer something of a niche commodity, and more wealthy people and celebrities want in.
