BSE Global's Brooklyn Basketball Training Center at old Modell's has opening celebration tomorrow. Youth clinic cost: $520/8 hours or $1,000/16 hours.

The new Brooklyn Basketball Training Center, occupying the former (and ultimately doomed) Modell's store at Site 5 across from the Barclays Center, is holding a grand opening celebration tomorrow from 5:30 to 8:30 pm.

"Walk through the spectacular facility and secure a spot for our After-School Club starting Sept. 29," the RSVP states

The operator is BSE Global, parent of the Brooklyn Nets, New York Liberty, and the arena operating company.

One day free before fee

On Sunday, Sept. 28, they will offer free clinics for children 6 to 17 years from 1 pm to 8 pm, as part of a soft launch.

When the eight-week after-school programs start, the hour-long sessions won't be cheap: either $520 for eight hours, or $1,000 for 16 hours.

That's $65/hour or $62.50/hour.

"The Brooklyn Basketball After-School Club is a structured, paid basketball program that provides high-quality training and competitive opportunities," the announcements state. "This program offers athletes the ability to engage in the game, like the pros!"

For boys 6 to 8 years old, there's one session a week, for $520.

For boys 9 to 10 years old, there are two sessions a week, for $1,000. Same for boys 11 to 13 years old and 14 to 17 years old.

For girls in the same age categories, there's one session a week, for $520.

Financial aid?

There's no pledge for free or discount slots, but applicants are told, "To inquire about financial aid or any other general questions, please reach out to info@brooklyn-basketball.com."

As I wrote in February, one question that surfaced when the plan surfaced was: how much would they cost?

The answer, I predicted, was most likely a lot, since Brooklyn Basketball's free programs are located at school gyms. Current for-fee programs ranged from $200 for three days, $595 for five days, six-hour days.

No wonder BSE Global was cagey.

At an online public meeting, I asked a question raised at a meeting of the Atlantic Yards Community Development Corporation: are the camps and clinics free or for-fee?

BSE Global's Marissa Shorenstein said most are free, since BSE Global partners with the Department of Education. "Our additional programming is a mixture of both free and fee-based programming," she added, noting that they offer sliding-scale fees.

The camps and clinics at Modell's, she said, would be consistent with the overall statistics that she provided.

That didn't quite answer the question, since the Modell's site, of course, would not be a school program. So, I predicted, it would be consistent with the non-school, fee-based programs.

Indeed. But at least there are free t-shirts.
