From the latest Construction Update: south parking lane on Atlantic east of Barclays Center to close to allow work at B4 site
The latest Atlantic Yards/Pacific Park Construction Update (bottom), covering the two weeks beginning Monday, Jan. 7, 2018, was circulated at 4:07 pm Friday (lead time) by Empire State Development (ESD) after preparation by Greenland Forest City Partners.
There are few changes from the previous update, given that vertical construction is not expected to start until spring, and the ongoing work is infrastructure or demolition. But there will be something new near the Barclays Center.
As excavation and hauling of soil from Blocks 1120 and 1121--the railyard blocks--continues, along with the installation of a third rail for two storage tracks and the demolition and removal of the existing substation equipment and structures west of the Sixth Avenue Bridge, a new MPT--Maintenance and Protection of Traffic--will be installed on Atlantic Avenue.
That will create "a safe work zone that encompasses the south parking lane" on Atlantic between the east end of the Barclays Center and the perpendicular Sixth Avenue. No crossings or pedestrian sidewalks will be closed, as a walkway on the south sidewalk of Atlantic Avenue will be provided.
That will allow work at the B4 site at the north east corner of the arena block, but it's not yet construction of the planned 18 Sixth Avenue. Rather, a contractor will begin the relocation and enclosure of the railyard's drill (switching track); that involves excavating and hauling soil from the B4 footprint.
More weekend work
Though weekend (daytime) electrical utility installations are expected to continue in the railyard and in the tunnel, there is some new work: "Pile Drilling for Vanderbilt [Avenue] Retaining Wall is scheduled for Saturdays during this reporting period. Drilling will be conducted during appropriate weekend daytime hours and necessary dust/noise mitigation measures will be utilized."
Why weekend work is needed perhaps will be explained at some point.

As shown in the photo, the hand demolition of 728 Atlantic Avenue--one of the two buildings that "bump" from Atlantic into the Vanderbilt Yard--is ongoing.
