Newsday: Islanders will stay in Nassau this year, not leaving early for fall arrival at Barclays Center
Given that New York Islanders Charles Wang has left ambiguity about whether the New York Islanders would break their lease and move to the Barclays Center before the 2015-16 season, I and others have suspected that the team would indeed make such a move later this year.
And surely Barclays Center operators, who need the 44 events to help stabilize arena revenue, wanted the team.
But Newsday reported yesterday that the lease stands:The Islanders will honor their lease with Nassau County and remain at the Nassau Coliseum through the end of the 2014-15 hockey season before moving to Barclays Center in Brooklyn, sources with knowledge of the decision said.
The Islanders had preliminary discussions in recent months about the team leaving the Uniondale arena at the end of this season, the sources said, but the conversations never advanced and the idea was scrapped.
As noted by NetsDaily:
For Islander fans, it means another season on Long Island, which has its pluses and minuses and for the Islander management team, led by Brett Yormark, it means more time to ready the arena, including adding both home and visiting locker rooms and some minor adjustments to make Barclays more amenable to watching NHL games.
