Nets "hit rock bottom" as they lose to Lakers, whose fans dominate Barclays Center

The Brooklyn Nets, in their fourth season, are supposed to be rebuilding... or is it simply "Represent Brooklyn." Either way, they're having a very New Jersey-like season, with their home court, the Barclays Center, sometimes being dominated by opponents' fans, as exemplified in the loss last night to the Los Angeles Lakers.

It's very much a sign that the vaunted "community spirit" that was supposed to be created by a major league sports team has not exactly arrived. Part of that is surely the quality of the team. Part is the newness. Part is pricing. The rest?

It may only be six games into the season, but the Nets already have hit rock bottom.
Not only did they lose to the Lakers 104-98 Friday night, but they did so in front of a sellout crowd of 17,732 inside Barclays Center that was made up of at least 16,000 Lakers fans.

On Friday night, the Nets became the first team in the league to start 0-6 after losing to the previously winless Los Angeles Lakers, 104-98. Kobe Bryant was serenaded with chants of “MVP! MVP!” from the sellout crowd at Barclays Center -- about 90 percent rooting for the Lakers.

Unfortunately, it seems to be THAT bad here, as the Nets lost to the Lakers, 104-98. And in the end, it was either heartbreakingly ugly or heartbreaking or just ugly.

In a season already ripe with disappointment, the Nets' 104-98 loss Friday night -- in front of a Barclays Center sellout crowd of 17,732 that kept erupting wildly for the Lakers -- was as maddening as it gets.
...And another slap in the face to a team and franchise still searching for an identity.
"When Cleveland came to town and Miami comes to town, they root for them," said Nets coach Lionel Hollins, who tried to shake things up by inserting rookie Rondae Hollis-Jefferson into the starting lineup. "We have to step up and become the Brooklyn Nets by our playing performance to make them want to cheer for us."
