From the Times travel section: the Barclays Center "still a sore point for many... my daughter doesn't care about that"

An excerpt from My Brooklyn, Then and Now, the cover article in the 7/13/14 New York Times Travel section:

This month, my wife is taking my daughter and a friend to see Katy Perry at the Barclays Center, the professional sports arena and home to the Brooklyn Nets, which looks like a giant rusted flying saucer come to rest on Flatbush Avenue. Long fought and argued over, and still a sore point for many, it has become a venue to rival Madison Square Garden.
My daughter doesn’t care about that. She’s just happy the show is five minutes from home. 

And there you have it. It's a reasonable summary of a complicated issue and an unsurprising consensus from the next generation. And I can't fault the author for not saying more here, given the breadth of the subject.

In the Metro section

Then again, the author is Wendell Jamieson, who also serves as the Times's Metro Editor. And the Times's Metro section has done a notably variable--and often poor--job of covering the Barclays Center and the larger Atlantic Yards project.

Consider the Times's scoop on the announcement of a deal to impose a 2025 deadline on the Atlantic Yards housing, along with a new subsidiary and two all-affordable towers. 

The Times erroneously suggested the housing would be "ten years early" and, most importantly, failed to report that half the "affordable" units in the new towers would go to households (if four people) earning more than $140,000 a year in income.

And the Times has failed to cover the lawsuit involving Brooklyn United for Innovative Local Development (BUILD) and promises of a path to union jobs.
